In 1945, when Lucille Kirtley Laney became First Lady of Arkansas, the Old State House was not yet a museum. Within a decade of her term as first lady, the Old State House would be established as a museum, and the first ladies’ gown exhibit would be a cornerstone of its exhibits.

Mrs. Laney’s gown is a black dress made of a synthetic lace fabric and trimmed with aqua grosgrain ribbon sash. She was married to Governor Benjamin Travis Laney, the 33rd Governor of Arkansas, and was first lady from 1945-1949.
